Cambridge Online encourages local businesses to take on more apprentices

Cambridge Online partners with Cambridge Regional College to sign-up new apprentice

Cambridge Online has worked in partnership with Cambridge Regional College to welcome a new apprentice to its workforce.  The business capitalised on the college’s apprentice service which selects suitable candidates for local organisations and provides training and support throughout an employee’s apprenticeship.

Harry Humphries has joined Cambridge Online as a Microsoft IT support apprentice, initially providing IT support desk functions for internal staff.  Harry is 19 and lives in St Neots, and he has recently completed a two-year BTEC National Diploma in Information Technology at Cambridge Regional College.  Staff at the college worked with Harry to discuss options when he finished his diploma, including study at university, job options and apprenticeships covering 47 different areas.

After the college identified the apprenticeship opportunity at Cambridge Online, Harry went for an interview with David Brierley, the company’s technical development director.  Harry is now gaining practical experience together with studying one day a week at the College, working towards a City and Guilds IT Professional Level 2 Diploma.

Harry Humphries, IT support apprentice, Cambridge Online, commented:

“Working for Cambridge Online as an apprentice is ideal for me; it provides practical skills as well as college study.  I did consider university, but didn’t want to be stuck in a class all the time – I wanted to work and gain experience, and earn money while I am learning.  I am very busy - configuring laptops, setting up back-up systems and it has inspired me to become a networking or an infrastructure technician.”

“Many of my friends are taking up or considering apprenticeships and more employers should look at taking on apprentices, it gives companies the chance to train employees specifically to help their business.”

Kym Moussi, work-based learning adviser, Cambridge Regional College, commented:

“We are seeing more applicants for apprentices and more companies offering apprenticeships – demand is growing on both sides.  We would encourage organisations to explore apprenticeships – our free service helps with advertising the role, selecting candidates, plus mentoring and training throughout the apprenticeship.

Apprentices are directly employed with the employer for the duration of the apprenticeship, but the majority of apprentices will stay with their employer after the training has ended.  We can provide advice on pay levels, qualifications and study – also apprentices are now from a wide age group from 16 to 65, employees already working for an organisation can also study on apprenticeship courses to gain nationally recognised qualifications.”

Ray Olds, chief executive officer, Cambridge Online, commented:

“As a business, Cambridge Online is committed to supporting apprentices, recruits such as Harry have great potential and are willing to learn and get fully involved in our business.  Cambridge Regional College is a great partner, helping us realise our ambition to introduce apprentices and providing high quality training which supports the work-based training that we provide.  I would recommend apprenticeships to businesses in our area as we always need to invest in new talent and give young people their first break in the job market.”
