Just when you may have thought that Microsoft had covered all the options for Dynamics NAV clients (after all we have the Windows client, the web client, the universal app for smart phone and tablet!), in Dynamics NAV 2017 Microsoft launched the Outlook Client.So what’s great about that? This is all about user productivity. Remember Satya Nadella’s mission to empower the people? The Outlook client provides further choice to enable people to work in the way that suits them best. For lighter users of the ERP solution, the Outlook client can prove more familiar and intuitive.
In 2014 it was estimated that there were some 1.1 billion users of Microsoft Office worldwide. This extrapolated to an estimate of 500-600m Outlook users. If you don’t use Outlook in your organisation, then you may be more interested in other NAV features!
You are reading on, great! By the way, if you are reading this as a user of OWA for iOS the good news is that you can use the Outlook client on your iPhone too.
So what does it do? The Outlook Client for Dynamics NAV 2017 enables Outlook to function as a hub for NAV data and processes. The linking of email, calendar, contacts and tasks means that the system will recognise the contact and automatically offer the related NAV information (provided, of course, that the user has the permission to access the data). The client is also capable of collecting data from attachments and sending machine readable format directly into NAV (as well as with a link to the source document).
• Supplier emails in an invoice: NAV’s Outlook Client will read the details and create the unposted document in NAV, with attachment and initiate the workflow for approval. Benefit: accuracy of processing the transaction (no rekeying required).
• Customer emails in request for repeat order. User converts this to NAV order all within the Outlook Client. Benefit: speed of responding to customer and accurately creating new orders: that all important quote to cash process!
• Field sales person sets up meeting with a customer. Access summary information on customer activity. Benefit: sales person is more informed; customer is delighted!
All of these features support the “in” Office 365 experience. Contacts in Outlook are synchronised with NAV, CRM and / or Office 365 People.
