NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE (NAS)

NAS diagramNetwork-attached storage (NAS) is a concept of shared storage over a TCP/IP network. NAS devices are typically specialised and optimised file server using Network File System (NFS) for UNIX environments, Common Internet File System (CIFS) for Microsoft Windows environments, FTP and other networking protocols. Unlike Storage Area Networks (SAN) where a private Fibre Channel network is used for data transfer, NAS devices use existing TCP/IP network and are therefore, noted in part as, a cost effective solution. NAS may be easily deployed in a heterogeneous UNIX, Windows and Linux environments, sharing the same data between the different architectures.

NAS and Storage Area Networks (SANs) are regarded as complementary technologies. NAS devices can act as stand alone specialised file servers or as part of a SAN whereby NAS devices can be allocated more resource from the SAN.

HP StorageWorks NAS family builds on the power of NAS and SAN complementary technologies for simplified network management, increased efficiency, and enhanced return on investment. HP NAS portfolio offers small business, departmental and enterprise class storage:

Entry-level NAS - HP NAS 1000s, NAS 1200s and NAS b2000

Mid-range level NAS - HP NAS 2000s, NAS 4000s, NAS b3000, NAS 8000

Enterprise class NAS - HP NAS 9000s and NAS e7000
